Phonics

Phonics is a key part of our learning in EYFS and KS1. It is the basis of how we read and how we write and spell words. You can learn more about what phonics is and how we teach it here. There are also resources on the page such as sound mats and word lists, as well as ways you can help your child with their reading at home.

Maths

We follow a concrete - pictoral - abstract method in Maths. This means that we start understanding concepts by using practical equipment - anything from sharing out cubes or adding using base-10. We then move onto drawing or manipulating pictures to solve calculations. These methods allow us to understand what is happening when we do a calculation (adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying) so we can then progress on to written methods such as column addition and long multiplication. You can view our Progression in Calculation here to see how we teach the children in class.

Homework

Please read with your child as often as possible. If we feel that your child can read their book satisfactorily they can change it once a week. Please sign your child’s book every time you hear them read.

Homework is set on a Friday and is due in by the following Wednesday. Spellings are tested on a Thursday.
